An earthquake romance. A genre-defying song play. With a score by leading contemporary composer John Adams and a libretto by the late poet June Jordan I was looking at the ceiling and then I saw the sky is a modern day Threepenny Opera that weds blues, gospel, minimalism, funk and pop. Set amid the aftermath of LA's last big quake, this opera-musical hybrid follows seven young Angelenos, intertwined on their journey toward love and self discovery. 20 years after the 1994 Northridge earthquake, the LA County Arts Commission presents the long overdue Los Angeles premiere as part of the Zev Yaroslavsky Signature Series. Performed by Long Beach Opera, known for bold productions of new work, this concert staging is conducted by Artistic Director Andreas Mitisek.
I was looking at the ceiling and then I saw the sky stars Cedric Berry, Bernard Holcomb, Zeffin Quinn Hollis, Andrew Nguyen, Lindsay Patterson, Zipporah Peddle and Holly Sedillos.
